This video introduces concept mapping and the Sentient Knowledge Map (SKM) as powerful tools for institutional modelling in higher education. You’ll learn what a concept map is, why it often communicates complex information better than lists or traditional documents, and how to build a simple map yourself. The video also shows how to “read” a network of connected thoughts so you can follow relationships, context, and meaning at a glance. Finally, it provides a clear overview of the SKM’s core building blocks—thoughts, types, tags, and connectors—and explains how these elements combine to create practical models, libraries, and help resources, including a built-in model of a universal higher education institution to demonstrate how the approach works in the real world.
The video complements Chapter 2.6 of my recently published book Metrics, Mapping, and Modelling for Masterful Management in Higher Education (Emerald Press, 2025). Visit our website to see the complete list of our videos.
If you’re involved in higher-ed leadership, strategy, assessment, or institutional research, I’d love for you to take a look at the video and add your comments below. If you would like assistance implementing any of the ideas addressed, please compete a consultation request form – the first hour is free for any institution.
