This video provides a practical roadmap for adopting the Sentient Knowledge Map (SKM) on campus—from governance and installation to long-term rollout and maintenance. Viewers learn the copyright boundaries for the SKM, contributed resources, and commercial content; the functional differences between browser-based and client-based versions; and the step-by-step process for downloading, installing, and cloning the SKM to create an institution-specific (and potentially proprietary) local version. Because full SKM implementation touches nearly every operational area and can meaningfully shift institutional culture, the video recommends an enterprise-style deployment—similar to PeopleSoft or Banner—delivered in three phased stages over an extended period, with clear guidance on required resources, timelines, training, and support. It also covers key decisions about what to include in a local clone, how master and synchronized copies differ, how to define features and access levels by user group, and how to apply access controls to both concept maps and back-end systems reached through the SKM portal.
The video complements Chapter 27 of my recently published book Metrics, Mapping, and Modelling for Masterful Management in Higher Education (Emerald Press, 2025). Visit our website to see the complete list of our videos.
