I’m excited to share my recently published book chapter from Metrics, Mapping, and Modelling for Masterful Management in Higher Education (Emerald Press, 2025) entitled Support Resources to Help with SKM Implementation.
Chapter 28 is the “you’re not on your own” chapter—an implementation support kit designed to help campuses adopt the Sentient Knowledge Map (SKM) confidently and efficiently. It walks readers through the full range of built-in help resources available to both administrators and everyday users of the SKM and TheBrain application, all conveniently jump-linked from the SKM Home area of the map. The chapter highlights quick look-up utilities for types, tags, connectors, and other reference material that make the model easier to navigate and apply consistently, along with video presentations that demonstrate how to build, use, and expand the SKM in real institutional contexts. It also introduces a reverse-lookup tool as an additional way to find information when you’re not sure where it lives in the map. Finally, the chapter summarizes the key benefits of implementing the SKM and points to the features that enable each, and it includes ready-to-use slide decks to help leaders promote the Sentient Initiative on campus—so adoption is supported not only by training and documentation, but by clear communication and shared understanding.
Many of the book’s chapters have a companion video which can be viewed for free on the Higher Education Leadership Learning Online Community web site. Visit the site to see the complete and evolving list.
If you’re involved in higher-ed leadership, strategy, assessment, or institutional research, I’d love for you to take a look at the chapter and add your comments below. If you would like assistance implementing any of the ideas addressed, please compete a consultation request form – the first hour is free for any institution.
