Rethinking Management in Higher Ed: The Sentient Initiative

I’m excited to share my recently published book chapter from Metrics, Mapping, and Modelling for Masterful Management in Higher Education.

Chapter One introduces the core premise of the book: colleges and universities are complex, interconnected systems, and most traditional management tools simply don’t capture that reality. In higher education, every decision ripples across academic programs, administrative units, and institutional culture.

To address this, the chapter introduces the Sentient Initiative and the Sentient Knowledge Map (SKM)—frameworks designed to help leaders see how the many parts of an institution fit together, interact, and influence one another. By mapping these relationships, decision-makers can gain a clearer, more coherent understanding of operations, opportunities, and hidden constraints.

Chapter One also sets the stage for a broader ambition: building a Universal Institutional Model to support more transparent, evidence-based, and collaborative decision-making across the sector. The goal is a future in which institutions become easier to understand, navigate, and improve—because their structures and dynamics are finally made visible.
