This video focuses on building an inclusive, durable strategic planning process that prepares an institution for change—before the “official” planning even begins. Because strategic planning is inherently political and tied to real resource decisions, the video emphasizes a simple truth: a change imposed is a change opposed. Effective leaders don’t push a plan onto campus; they prepare to plan by setting up the right committee structure and charges, creating tools to evaluate the process and outcomes, and establishing a clear approach for drafting, assessing, and approving the final plan. Most importantly, it argues for a pre-strategic “silent phase”—starting roughly a year in advance—where leaders identify likely major shifts, engage in stakeholder education and fact-finding, and cultivate peer champions who can advocate credibly for change from within the community.
The video complements Chapter 22 of my recently published book Metrics, Mapping, and Modelling for Masterful Management in Higher Education (Emerald Press, 2025). Visit our website to see the complete list of our videos.
